Weather visualizations for the Olympics:
Clouds and surface heat index & winds over Savannah
You can look at RAMS output at two km resolution computed for June 20,
1996. Each example is accompanied with an in-line image. Click on the image
to see a full-size 24-bit image of the same data. There is an MPEG animation
for each example, and a corresponding VRML geometry.
Output at two km resolution over Savannah, where the yachting events
will occur, is illustrated. Cloud water density is shown as isosurfaces
with surface heat index shown as pseudo-color filled contours. Surface
winds are shown with streamlines. An 18-frame
MPEG animation shows how the cloud form during the day and are pushed
back from the shoreline by sea breezes. You can also download
a VRML-based model corresponding to the still image.
The same data as in the previous example are shown, but using different
techniques, namely direct volume rendering for clouds and vector arrows
for winds. A 19-frame MPEG animation
will show you these techniques. You can also download
a VRML-based model corresponding to the still image.
Now you can look at the next set of examples.
You can see additional images and
learn more about this project, and the visualization work being done.
You can learn more the regional weather model and the parallelized
implementation on an IBM SP2.
