Weather visualizations for the Olympics:
Clouds and surface heat index - early and late forecasts

You can look at RAMS output at eight km resolution computed for June 18, 1996. Each example is accompanied with an in-line image. Click on the image to see a full-size 24-bit image of the same data. There also is an MPEG animation for each example.

Output at eight km resolution over the entire Olympics domain is illustrated. An isosurface of cloud water density is shown with pseudo-color filled contours of heat index, which are warped vertically by local topography. This RAMS run was made early in the day. A 74-frame MPEG animation will show you what the model predicted at that time.

This is the same visualization as in the previous example, but from a later run of RAMS, using updated initial and boundaries conditions. In addition, surface winds are shown by vector arrows of constant size aligned with the wind velocity, and pseudo-colored by wind speed. A 29-frame MPEG animation will show you the refinements predicted by the model.

Now you can look at the next set of examples.
You can see additional images and learn more about this project, and the visualization work being done.

You can learn more the regional weather model and the parallelized implementation on an IBM SP2.
