Visual Technologies Department
Technical advances have allowed tremendous amounts of sensor and coded
data to be collected. The Visual Technologies department creates and
develops graphics, visualization, and image technologies for
extracting, conveying, and visually communicating the information
underlying this data.
Some of our recent research efforts have focused on the acquisition,
representation, processing, and transmission of geometric and image
data. Examples of these projects include our efforts to create
high-resolution images for the Hermitage Museum web site
and a finely-detailed digital 3D model of Michelangelo's Florentine Pietà. Our
research expertise also includes efficient rendering and visualization
algorithms that run on systems ranging from a PDA to a massively
parallel cluster of workstations.
The results of our research are disseminated through publications in
leading technical conferences, patent filings, standards
participation, and customer engagements. We collaborate with
top-ranked academic institutions in addition to our efforts within IBM
with Systems Group, Printing Systems, Product Lifecycle Management,
Life Sciences, and IBM Global Services.
