|
|
| This
research focuses on effective visual representations of multiple types
of data, and visual analysis environments that allow exploration across
data types. This work includes basic research into the perceptual issues
behind the visual interpretation of data, digital image libraries, development
of robust visualization toolkits, and application of visualization to a
variety of different domains. |

We
are very interested in how perception affects the task of visualization.
For example, many popular colormaps are perceptually non-uniform, leading
to the possibility that important details may be masked depending on their
location in the colormap. We have conducted experiments to better understand
how perception affects visual interpretation of data.

We
develop visualization tools and libraries which we then apply to a variety
of visualization problems. The toolkit Opal is the visualization environment
with which we are now building our visualization applicatons.

| Biological
and medical data offers a wealth of opportunity for the application of
visualization tools. We have applied visualization to protein studies,
heart simulation data, medical records data, tumor reconstruction, and
a variety of other areas.

We
are interested in how one searches and navigates through libraries of images,
and applying sematic categories to make searching for images more intuitive.
