Steve joined the Visual Communication Lab in January 2009. Steve holds a BS degree in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Masters degree in Computer Science from the University of Saskatchewan. His Master's thesis "Improving Understanding of Website Privacy Policies" focused on improving the usability and implementation of privacy user interfaces on the web.

Steve joined IBM in January of 1979 as a System Engineer for the General Systems Division. His interest in human computer interaction brought him to IBM Research in 1984 where he built the Olympic Messaging System for the 1984 Olympics.

Steve has conducted research in the areas of voice store and forward, handwriting recognition, speech recognition, utilization of internet for electronic business, user understanding of privacy policies and most recently voice communications over IP for teleconferencing.

In his spare time, Steve is an amateur ham radio operator, avid reader, amateur chef, and enjoys walking and snorkeling along the beaches of Hawaii.
