The Visual Communication Lab
is looking to expand!

The Visual Communication lab at the IBM Center for Social Software is seeking software engineers to help us design, build and deploy the next generation of visualization-based applications. Our engineers work to solve critical problems in visualization, communication, collaboration, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, analytics, information retrieval and natural language processing.

Our group offers a friendly, vibrant and intellectually exciting environment with opportunity to have significant impact internally and externally, on IBM and academic research communities.


Software Engineer

Candidates should hold a B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or a related field and should have skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Ability and interest in processing and analyze large quantities of data (e.g. analytics, natural language processing, social network analysis, information retrieval etc.) in support, or as part of, exciting visual representations.
  • Design and development of new visualization techniques.
  • Design and construction of web applications with rich user experiences. Some tools we currently use include: Ruby on Rails, jQuery, Java.
  • Scalable system architecture and cloud deployment. Experience with Linux, Hadoop, relational databases and various key-value based stores a plus.

Research Staff Member

We are looking for a PhD-level researcher who is excited by data, visualization, and communication. A job candidate should have a history of designing and building innovative information visualizations. An emphasis on large-scale user participation (e.g. collaboration, crowdsourcing, social communication) and on evaluation of hypotheses about user behavior is a plus. A successful candidate will have published in one or more areas of information visualization, computer-supported cooperative work, and human-computer interaction.
