Visual Communication Lab

Visualization is traditionally viewed as an efficient way of transferring a large amount of information from a database into an individual's head. We believe that visualizations become even more powerful when multiple people access them for collaborative sensemaking. By building graphical displays that spark the exchange of ideas and insights, we investigate the social and communicative value of information visualization. Our living laboratory for exploring these concepts is Many Eyes.

Our method

We develop visualizations that help people see and exchange information in novel ways. Our designs aim to transform visualization from a solitary activity into a collaborative one. Some application areas are citizen advocacy, social network analysis, software development, and executive decision-making. By allowing people to observe and orient themselves in complex information landscapes, our inventions enable faster, more insightful decisions.
