Distance learning system based on Web operation recording technology

A view of 1-to-1 connection

Overview

Today, we can observe several commercial learning systems based on WWW technology. But there were problems that come from conventional technology;

  1. Such a system forces learners to click and show pages by themselves.
  2. When an instructor creates his or her own contents by using existing Web pages, it is difficult to reuse existing Web pages. It is because there are gaps between intentions of authors of the pages and the instructor.
We applied our Web Operation Recorder to a distance learning system to solve these problems. We did joint research with Zenjin Education Institute, Tamagawa Gakuen to evaluate our technologies in a school education.

About Web Operation Recorder

Web Operation Recorder was developed by IBM's Tokyo Research Laboratory. It records not only operations of Web browsing, such as URL transitions, page scrolling, and mouse movement, but also object annotations on Web pages. You can put text on a Web page to explain the page or new hyperlinks without any modification on its HTML files.

Features and functions of our distance learning system

  • With Web Operation Recorder, you can easily create your own contents that have (1) automatic page loading and scrolling, (2) making annotations on an the Web page. The contents help learners know where is an important part in a Web page.
  • By attaching annotations to a Web page, an instructor can show an important part of the page and show his or her comment on the page. In this way, instructors can reuse not only their pages but also existing pages on the Internet.
  • In our system, data volume of the contents is much smaller than conventional multimedia authoring tools. Therefore, you can apply our system to low band width network environment.
  • Our system enables you to show an example operations of Web-based applications, which is difficult to explain by using a paper or an static Web pages.
