Broadcast music management system

Nowadays, huge amount of multimedia content is broadcasted and it become more difficult for content owner or user to grasp exactly which content is really aired. In this situation, there is a strong demand for a system which can automatically and exactly find a target content among huge amount of content by monitoring braodcast. For example, advertisers are interested in monitoring broadcast to ensure that their commercials are really broadcast as they contracted. Also, recording companies, composers and musicians are anxious to know exact count that their music has been used on the air for clalify royalty payment. Broadcast Music Management Project (BMMP) provides a solution for this requirement on the basis of Audio DataHiding technology.

Broadcast Music Management Project (BMMP)

This project aims to develop broadcast music management system in FM radio which can automatically detects title of broadcast music and it's airtime to grasp broadcast condition of each music for the purpose of rights management.This system is developed based on watermarking technology. Watermarking is a technology which enables users to embed extra information into digital content transparently and inseparably. That is the embedded extra information is detectable even after various post-processes, such as D/A-A/D conversion, compression, FM transmission and so on. Therefore in this project, music ID will be embedded into each broadcast music as watermark in advance of FM radio broadcasting. The watermarked music will be stored in a music database and delivered to FM radio stations with on-line delivery system. FM radio stations select and edit these watermarked music for their radio program and transmit them in FM radio wave. TRL will develop a prototype system which automatically generates accurate rights management reports on broadcast music by detecting the embedded watermak IDs. The trial of this system will start from early in 2001 in Osaka.

BMMP system overview

BMMP system consists of a watermarking system and a music on-line delivery system. TRL will develop the watermarking system in this project. The watermarking system is composed of "Music ID Embedding System" and "Music ID Monitoring System". The former system embeds music ID into music clips which will be aired via FM radio, and the latter system grasp broadcast condition by detecting music ID of watermark. The following figure shows a system architectureoverview of the watermarking system.

• Music ID Embedding System

  This system embeds ISRC and Usage ID into audio content with Audio DataHiding before its on-line delivery to FM radio stations. ISRC is an internationally unique audio discrimination code, which consists of country code, company code, recording year code and serial number. Usage ID is a newly defined system compliant code for the BMMP trial which represents the intended usage of the content to find misplacement of the content.

  
• Music ID Monitoring System

  This system receives and captures FM radio broadcasting and automatically creates on-air music reports which contains detected ISRC, Usage ID and airtime. The created report is displayed on a monitor in real time and recorded in a log file at the same time.
