DataHidingTM for insurance claim process

Digital cameras bring new opportunities and risks to insurance claim processing.

Digital cameras make it quicker and cheaper to develop and transit physical films. They improve the cycle time of insurance claim processing and make it possible to develop centralized digital photograph databases. On the other hand, digital photographs can be easily tampered with by using commercial software.

To solve this problem, IBM Research Tokyo Research Laboratory is proposing DataHidingTM as a solution

  • To identify the origins of a digital photograph: who took it, when, etc.
  • To verify the integrity of a digital photograph: locate any altered places.

DataHidingTM insurance claim system

IBM Research Tokyo Research Laboratory developed a secure photo filing and transmission system as a prototype of the front end of a secure electronic insurance claim processing system, in partnership with Yasuda Fire & Marine Inc. (YFM). On November 5, 1998, YFM gave a presentation on the system at the IBM Global Insurance Executive Conference in Monte Carlo, which was viewed by many IBM customers as one of highlights of the conference.

The system can facilitate work at local service centers on automobile loss claims. An adjuster at a claim service center or an employee of a repair shop takes pictures of a damaged car, using our developed secure digital camera and compact flash, and then registers them with our developed secured image filing and transmission system. The service center manager and auditors at HQ can check whether this picture was taken with an authorized camera and whether any unauthorized alteration has been attempted.
