|       | According to recent estimates, the cost of computer crimes caused by hackers totals about $10 billion over the past five years, a figure which includes cell phone fraud. Hackers can wreak havoc by destroying files, stealing trade secrets or blackmailing a company by threatening damage. And with the rapid expansion of e-mail, the Internet and Web sites, computer crimes will probably continue to escalate. In a recent study of 400 companies, the FBI found that nearly half had experienced some kind of unauthorized use of their computer systems in the previous year. One-third of those break-ins occurred despite the presence of a firewall -- sophisticated software that should (ideally) stop illegitimate traffic. To help combat the growing computer crime rate, IBM has a potent arsenal; companies can now protect their computer systems with IBM’s Global Security Analysis Lab. Find out how it works. |
