Designed to find and summarize information on the Web, GCS pushes the results of its search, culled according to a user's personal profile, directly to a PC or Personal Digital Assistant connected to the Internet. The task of collecting and sorting through vast amounts of information falls to the various components of several geographically-divided GCS Gatherers.

The process begins with crawlers searching out information from both readily available and obscure data sources, Web servers, news servers, database systems and file systems such as corporate presentations and tape archives. The data is then organized  by a Recognizer according to type -- graphics, database files, Web documents, e-mails or sounds.
