During the 1990s, magnetic recording has been increasing its data density at a rate of 60 percent a year -- doubling every 18 months -- just like the vaunted Moore's Law of transistor density. But today's chief way of storing computer data may reach physical limits in the next decade or two that make it unacceptably problematic to keep such tiny data bits stable.  So IBM researchers are exploring potential successor technologies -- including atomic force microscopy and holographic data storage -- that may enable data densities well beyond the current storage density of magnetic recording.
