Systems Technology and Microarchitecture
|
Overview
Our mission is to decrease system costs, increase system performance, and make system components more extensible through advanced architecture, microarchitecture, packaging, and interconnect solutions. As the frequency and performance of microprocessors increase, the overall system structure, including the memory and I/O subsystems dominate both the cost and the performance of a system. While we are working on improving the performance of the processors in a system through extensive microarchitectural analysis and invention, we are simultaneously making the overall system structure (both logical and physical) more efficient through improved memory hierarchies (specifically, using commodity silicon), through denser packaging and better connectivity in the packaging structure, and through deployment of higher bandwidth solutions via optical interconnect, packaging, and content utilization (large caches).
Our group, with its 30-year history in evolving server architecture and microarchitecture, is the basis for most of the architectural, microarchitectural, and system evolutions among our server brands. We have added circuit design and technology expertise to that base to improve our overall system costs and performance.
