HIGH-TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTING MERCURY-BASED CUPRATE FILMS AND SQUIDs

We have overcome various experimental difficulties and succeeded in synthesizing high-quality Hg-cuprate films with T of 125 K. SQUIDs fabricated using these films have operated up to a record-setting temperature of 112 K.

• Our films have extremely high current carrying capability at high temperatures (zero-field
  J 10 A/cm at 100 K). This is close to the ultimate theoretical limit.

• SQUIDs based on these films have been demonstrated to operate at much higher temperatures than achieved previously. This opens the opportunity of using non-conventional techniques such as on-chip thermoelectric cooling.
