Statistics Research

Extracting meaningful information in a complicated world.

The Statistics group is involved in research in a wide range of areas, such as Forecasting, Time Series Analysis, Spatial Statistics, Linear Models, Reliability, Classification Theory, Risk Management and Quality Control. The group is also involved in a number of projects with several IBM divisions, other groups in Research and IBM customers. Recent projects include the following:
  • Component cost forecasting and product planning;
  • Monitoring of data streams and detection of abrupt changes with applications to control of a manufacturing line and investment policies;
  • Analyzing variability and developing prediction techniques for large data sets, with applications to animal breeding data and rating of sports teams;
  • Development of a Drought Atlas - a geographic information system to characterize patterns of rainfall, stream flow, floods, and droughts;
  • Modelling the microstructure of thin metal films;
  • Modelling the process of promotions and sales for a catalog company;
  • Modelling and analysis of reliability of systems with incompletely identified causes of failure;
  • Risk analysis of insurance policies;
  • Development of forecasts for consumer demand.
