The China SSME Symposium took place in Beijing on September 12 - 13, 2005. Apporoximately100 attendees from government, industry, academia and media participated in the two day event. Among them were 57 leading professors and deans from 25 universities (including 2 universities in Taiwan). Two professors from the U.S. who are considered SSME leaders -- Henry Chesbrough, UC Berkeley, and James Tien, RPI -- participated in the symposium.
The event was designed to advocate IBM thought leadership in services innovation, build SSME awareness and mindshare, cultivate relationships with key advocates in China's services market, and accelerate improvements to the services economy by working with government, academic and industry leaders in China.
The end goal of the symposium was to better enable universities in China to introduce SSME content into existing courses. The next step will be to introduce SSME courses and degrees. The symposium provided the attendees with relevant materials on services innovation and helped establish key relationships for shaping strategies and programs to enable universities to introduce SSME curriculum in China.

Summary: The Seminar on "Service Innovation and Service Science Subject Building" initiated by IBM and Peking University is held in Beijing, indicating that the new subject of service science is put on the agenda of the subject building of higher learning institutions.
Service industry plays a more and more important role in economic development. According to relating statistics, service industry occupies 74% of the GDP of the U.S, while only 32% of China. According to Yang Fuqing, professor of the China Academy of Sciences, the development of modern service industry calls for the standardization of talents, while how to cultivate innovative talents has become a bottleneck restricting the innovation and development of services. Tong Jin, director of the Electronic Service Department of the School of Software and Microelectronics, said that IT technology is the support of the service science and it's better for colleges and universities to recruit students with IT background to study service science. Jim Spohrer, head of IBM Almaden Research Center, said that it's necessary to integrate the services according to the requirement of the clients.

IBM is the first one to put forward the concept of “service science” in the world and conduct study and exploitation on this subject.

Service is a concept containing many things ranging from hotel to doctors and layers. Service industry plays a more and more important role in economic development. According to relating statistics, service industry occupies 75.96% of the economy of the U.S, while only 30.98% of China.
Services, especially those in IT service and information circle, contain huge opportunities. Many companies grasp new business opportunities through more efficient IT system, optimized business flow and Internet. For example, the income of IT-based service industry of IBM occupies 50% of its total revenue. The era of service economy has arrived, but few has concerned with the cultivation of talents.
IBM is now cooperating or negotiating with some renowned universities in the U.S, U.K and China to establish a new service science subject. It is now negotiating with the School of Software and Microelectronics of Peking University to establish an E-Service Department.
