Services Sciences, Management and Engineering
On June 3-4, Bentley College hosted a meeting on "The Art and Science of Services." The two-day conference, which was co-sponsored by IBM and McGraw-Hill, was attended by approximately 70 individuals from academia, government and industry.
Jim Spohrer gave the keynote presentation on SSME to this influential group and received a very positive response. In addition to Jim's participation, Mike Kuhn, director of IBM Briefing Centers and Centers of Competency, represented IBM on a panel with Kronos, Transform Partners and Delphi Group. This panel focused on "The Challenges of Doing Business in Today's Global Service Economy." In Mike's opening remarks, he provided an introduction to IBM's On Demand strategy and IBM's values.
In addition to the speakers and panel discussions, the meeting was a great opportunity for IBM to meet face-to-face with some of the top thinkers on services innovation. We've identified some opportunities for collaboration and will be following up with several of the participants.
Below is a breakdown of attendees:
- 28 universities were represented including Harvard, Syracuse, Carnegie Mellon, Vanderbilt, BYU, Cornell and a handful of international universities.

- 7 consultants
- 6 industry representatives including Verizon, Comcast Cable, and McGraw-Hill.
- 1 government representative (Suvrajeet Sen, National Science Foundation).
- 1 press representative (Julia Kirby, Harvard Business Review).
- 4 IBM representatives (Jim Spohrer, Lilian Wu, Mike Kuhn, and Matt Berry).

Following last month's UK university workshops, this was the latest effort to build a community around the development of SSME.
