IBM Research

Work with Universities

Overview
Our research extends beyond the boundaries of our labs. We work with our colleagues in university labs and regularly publish papers with them. We also foster collaborative relationships through Fellowships, grants and shared research programs.

Consult the following sections and links to learn more about our work with universities and the activities we support for the academic community.

Collaborations

Establishing a services sciences, management and engineering academic discipline
IBM and partners from academia and industry are developing a new research area to meet the challenges of the services economy.

The IBM-Stanford Spintronic Science and Applications Center (SpinApps)
Works on the future of processor technology based on the magnetic spin of electrons.

Albany NanoTech
A unique institutional model within the University of Albany (SUNY) blends academic and industrial research on nanotechnology frontiers, including electronics and materials.

Isidore Rigoutsos and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (IBM Watson)
Dr. Rigoutsos and Prof. Gregory Stephanopoulos (from the Department of Chemical Engineering) have been collaborating on applications of pattern discovery to the analysis of biological data. They co-supervise several PhD candidates, and have been teaching a spring semester and a summer professional course, both on Bioinformatics, since January of 2000. Rigoutsos and Stephanopoulos recently published a joint paper and are in the process of finishing and submitting several more for publication. The two have recently accepted an invitation by Springer-Verlag to edit a book as part of their "Advances in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology" series.

Robert Allen and Virginia Tech (IBM Watson)
Collaboration with Prof. Tim Long, Polymer Chemistry, Virginia Tech involving the investigation of the polymerization kinetics and mechanism of cyclic olefin/maleic anhydride copolymers.

Campbell Scott and Cornell University (IBM Almaden)
Collaborates with Prof. George Malliaras of the Department of Materials Science to study the charge injection process from metal electrodes into organic electronic materials.

University of California - Berkley: Christos Papadimitriou, Chair, Computer Science (IBM Almaden)

IBM Researchers at Universities
Isidore Rigoutsos (IBM Watson), Visiting Lecturer appointment in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2000-present). During the spring 2004 semester, he is teaching a graduate level course on Bioinformatics.

Fellowships Programs
IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Program is intended to honor exceptional Ph.D. students in disciplines of mutual interest and to support IBM's commitment to diversity in the workplace. IBM Ph.D. Fellowships are awarded worldwide. IBM Ph.D. Fellows are awarded tuition, fees, and a stipend of $17,500 (US) for one nine-month academic year.

Support for University Research
IBM Research contributes to university research in a number of ways, including awarding money and equipment grants. Faculty interested in pursuing such support should contact a colleague at IBM Research.

An example is how IBM seeks to support quality proposals for university research in the area of materials and devices for microelectronics which align with IBM's high priority research interests. This is done through funding sources such as the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), and the Focus Center Research Program of the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).
