Real-World Projects

A particular aspect of my research is its applied focus. My primary interest is to develop solutions for real problems rather than developing techniques which later search for the right problem. The nuances of the real world provide ample complexity for modeling and research and provides (for me) a particular satisfaction in knowing that what I have developed and deployed is being used in daily operations in some corner of the world.

Auctions and eSourcing

Consumer Goods Company: This project was focused on the deployment of a private exchange for a large consumer goods company. The private exchange is used to run reverse combinatorial and volume discount auctions as part of their procurement operations. This project was a finalist for the Edelman Award 2002 . This research is reported in the following publication.

The WWRE Project: This is a joint deployment with Digital Union . WWRE is a consortium of over 60 retailers that uses the reverse auction platform ezMarket for procurement. The core engine for winner determination in ezMarket is our contribution .

Production Planning and Scheduling

The PDOS Project: PDOS is a suite of algorithms for production, design, operations and scheduling for the steel industry. The algorithms developed for this suite have been deployed at the Kimitsu Plant and the Yawata Plant for Nippon Steel Company, Japan. As of this year this suite is being deployed at Pohang Steel, Korea .
