I am a researcher and senior manager at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. I manage  the Policy & Networking department at the center.  Some of the projects that I am involved with can be viewed at the Communications/Networking research projects PIC page

I received my undergraduate degree from Indian Institute of Technology in 1987 and my doctorate degree from University of California, Berkeley  in 1991 from the Tenet Networking Group headed by Prof. Domenico Ferrari. I joined  IBM Research in 1992, and worked on  network control protocols and algorithms. In August 1995,   I took a detour to Philips Research, Briarcliff Manor where I dabbled in set-top boxes, embedded systems and digital television. I rejoined IBM Research in March 1997. In the interim, I also picked up a degree in management of technology from Brooklyn Polytechnic.

Research Interests:
My current work interests include topics related to policy based management, next generation networks, caching and content distribution networks, service differentiation and service level management. Other topics I am researching  include  policy enabled networks, adaptive control of web-servers, and the exploitation of Java based technologies for distributed web-based computing.

Professional Activities:

I have co-chaired the IEEE Policy Workshop 2004, Global Internet Symposium 2000, acted as the finance chair of Infocom 2002, and a TPC member in various workshops and conferences. I have served as the vice-chair and chair of IEEE Communication Society Technical Committee on Computer Communications (TCCC). I am currently serving as the Vice-Chair of IEEE Communication Society's Internet Technical Committee (ITC).

I also participate in the IETF, and am a senior member of the  IEEE. I have authored four books on the topic of networking.
