HCHS Class of '81 Physical 20th Reunion - 2001

There will be a live, in-the-flesh reunion at the high school on Sunday, June 3rd at 10am. Lauren (Buxbaum) Kacir is coordinating. She is at lbkacir@pol.net.

HCHS Class of '81 Virtual 15th Reunion - 1996

Welcome to the class of '81 virtual reunion! Like many of you, I blew it off -- I couldn't find a single other person who was going. But I was still interested in what had happened to everyone after all this time. And with all the recent Internet hoopla in the media, I thought it would be interesting to try to track people down on the net.

I found 18 people by searching the net. The rest of the information comes from Brenda Rich (who received a number of letters) and from my firsthand knowledge of people that I've stayed in contact with. Internet searching was done with a number of Web crawlers, particularly DEC's Alta Vista.

References to someone that I found in Web pages are included beneath their names; pages accessible from their home page (if any) are not included. Also, when someone is a regular poster to a newsgroup or listserv, I've included a reference to the group rather than to all of the archived postings that I found.

In general, the more unique names were easier to identify unambiguously. For instance, there are many "David Bacon"s on the net, but so far only one "David F. Bacon".

If any of the information is inaccurate or incomplete, send me a note. If you'd like to include a homepage for yourself but don't have the capability to host it, send me the HTML file and uuencoded image files and I'll host the page for you. If you feel that any of the information included herein violates your privacy, let me know and I'll remove it.

What follows is an alphabetical listing of class members for whom there is any information.

David

David F. Bacon

David is a computer scientist at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center, and is completing his Ph.D. at U.C. Berkeley via the Internet. He married Laura Bennett in 1994; she is studying film-making at NYU. They live in Manhattan.

  • The Manhattan Yacht Club
  • U.C. Berkeley Parallelism project

  • Melissa Bennett

Maddie Horstman reports that Melissa is an entomologist, specializing in ants. Apparently, there's a lot of money in ants.

    Jenni Bidner

Rachelle (Fontek) Zeluff reports: "I believe Jenni Bidner is a contributing editor to a photographic trade magazine Popular Photography, answering technical questions. This info is old if at all accurate."

    Lauren (Buxbaum) Kacir

Lauren wrote that she is happily living in a tiny town in Texas. She has two children, a two and a half year old boy, and a one and a half year old girl. They live in "a farmhouse surrounded by 80 head of cattle" which she, thankfully, does not have to herd! She is a pediatrician (working part-time) in a rural practice.

    David Casona

Polly Shulman ran into David on the steps of a Brooklyn courthouse; he's working there as a paralegal.

    Dawn Myfanwy Cohen

I am a Systems Analyst at Wyeth-Ayerst Research...looking at databases, data mining and machine learning issues for drug (ahem, that's prescription drug!) design and development. I got my Ph.D. in 1994 in computer science from Rutgers University, applying machine learning and expert systems techniques in DNA crystallography.

I am philosophically opposed to putting personal information out on the web, so I won't put any more here, but I'd love to correspond (even by email) with other folks from our class and neighboring classes. So please do drop me a line at the given email address and/or check out my web page. There's a lot of you out there that I really miss and have regretted greatly not keeping in touch!

    Email: cohend@war.wyeth.com

    Mattie (Cohan) Condray

Mattie just celebrated her fifth wedding anniversary - "no kids, but we do have a big, furry cat". She is a lawyer - "counsel for a DC-based non-profit trade association promoting the public transportation industry". She says her job is "a nice mix of the "real lawyer" work, and other non-lawyer stuff". She and her husband are both involved in community theater.

    H.H. Cooper

H.H. is working as an assistant director in the film industry. His credits include Jungle Fever, I Like It Like That, and Dead Presidents. You can find out more in the Internet movie database. H.H. lives in my building, but we've only run into each other once in two years -- in the laundry room.

    Steve Danzis

Steve is a playwright, living in Chicago last I knew. I got together with him a few times in San Francisco, and actually moved to a flat a few blocks from him on Castro Street. He seemed to think there was a compelling reason for leaving the Bay Area for Chicago, but I could never figure it out.

    Chris Dogonniuck

David Wallace reports: "On a visit to NYC this summer I had dinner with Chris Dogonniuck and his wife, Jennifer. They are living in Brooklyn and both are helping increase the cost of healthcare as physician's assistants."

    Alexander Dupuy

Alex was working at System Management Arts, a computer start-up, until a couple months ago. He is now living in the mountains of Guatemala for 18 months with his girlfriend Jennifer Burrell, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in anthropology at the New School for Social Research.

Alex posts frequently to the firewalls, IETF's URI working group, proxymail, BIND, and software agents mailing lists.

  • Ed Ferrell

Ed went to Yeshiva University graduate school for rabbinics and was ordained subsequently. He served as a pulpit rabbi in Manhattan before taking a job teaching at a yeshiva high school in New Jersey. He is married to a "CPA-turned-yeshiva teacher".

    Judy Fried

We're saddened to hear from Judy's mother that she died in October, 1995 after a two and a half year battle with breast cancer. She had graduated from the University of Chicago in 1986 and N.Y.U. Law School in 1991, and was living in San Francisco.

    Rachelle (Fontek) Zeluff

Rachelle attended SUNY Albany, and lived, worked and studied in Albany for 9 years. She got a bachelors in Business French '85 and Master of Arts French '90. She "spent quite a bit of time in France, determining that I truly can't stand the people". She had a fellowship abroad in '86 in Strasbourg.

Rachelle married high school era sweetheart Steven Zeluff, who she met on the ferry commuting to Hunter High. She is currently Marketing Manager and Sales Rep for HPI in Brooklyn, and has been in photographic sales for the past 4 years.

Rachelle writes: My son Mark is autistic and I am extremely involved in an intensive program for him, learning more about developmental disabilities than I ever dreamed I would need to know. This includes constant research and management of a home schooling program for him. Autism happens to be the developmental disability that receives the least amount of funding (with the highest rate of incidence) so a lot is "happening", mainly in the last couple of years. The cause is still a mystery and what is known as recovery is possible but very diificult. I get a lot of information off the internet, primarily from other parents and some professionals.

    Beverly Greenfield

Beverly is living with her boyfriend on a boat at the 79th Street Boat Basin in New York. She works in an office and acts as a booking agent for folk musicians. She is a regular contributor to FOLK_MUSIC Digest.

Maddie is working as an artist and is opening her own thrift store on Second Avenue and Tenth Street. She is living in the East Village, and can't figure out if it's being over-run by the homeless or the yuppies.

    Ludmila Hruda

Ludmila Hruda is finishing a Master's program in Psych at the University of Kansas and going on to a Ph.D. program in September at the University of Michigan.

    Email: Kanterman@PPG.Com or BKanterman@AOL.Com.

    Judy Lee

Judy lives with her husband Eric Tyson in a lovely house they bought a few years ago on California Street in San Francisco. She works at the University of California.

    Mark Lang

Mark is in NYC and acting in various arenas, teaching improvisation, recently wrote a full length screen play, and does some directing. He and a friend have a company that does "live comedic corporate entertainment", called Laughingstock that keeps him pretty busy, too.

    Email: MLang@Cris.Com

    Gregory Leong

I unfortunately was one of the 3 people who did not blow off the reunion although I only stayed for 10 minutes (I guess I semi-blew it off). Next time, someone should plan a reunion for Post-WWII alums.

I'm teaching Math at Scarsdale High School and have done graduate work in Exercise Science and Computer Science (although not simmultaneously). I still in Queens and am still involved in some volleyball stuff.

I taught at HCHS for a while and if anyone is really interested in how the school has devolved, we'll have to set up another Web site.

He's currently living in Albuquerque, NM with his five year old daughter Katarina, who is, of course, Talented and Gifted. She already plans to be either a marine biologist or a paleontologist.

Tom loves living outside of New York City. His hobbies (besides bragging about his daughter) are shooting and flying.

    Email: Russo@SWCP.Com

    Bruce Schneier

Bruce is an author and consultant on computer cryptosystems. He has written the widely used and respected book Applied Cryptography. He reported that he would have liked to come to the reunion, but was in Peru at the time.

Bruce's cryptography work made him the most web-referenced member of the class of '81. If anyone (particularly Bruce) has some selected web links to include, please send them to me.

    Email: Schneier@Counterpane.Com.

    David Salvage

    David is a psychiatrist.

    Robert Sarlls

I have been working in the finance business since graduation. After six years at Citibank (2.5 of which were in LALA land) and three years at European American Bank, I joined Rabobank Nederland (2nd largest Dutch bank) and worked first as a senior credit analyst covering food and agribusiness (makes sense coming from Staten Island, haha) and now I'm working on asset securitizations for our clients in the U.S. and Latin America.

My girlfriend Alice is a director of television commercials and plays. She's currently shopping a spec sitcom with the networks. She's from North Carolina which means I need a translator from time to time. Her sister says "Rob's nice, but he's so Yankee!!!!"

I am on the board of directors of the Louis August Jonas Foundation, the organization that operates Camp Rising Sun. I also have been involved for six years in the Kips Bay Boys and Girls club on the junior committee.

I have been obsessed with researching my family history. Trips have taken me to Kentucky, upstate NY, PA and California in meeting distant relatives and researchers. I've also spent a lot of time studying NYC architectural history as am amateur (the AIA guide has been a vital tool).

I stay in touch with Peter Spielvogel, Steve Strickman, Steve Patrinick, and Alan Olmsted. They all have net access, I believe.

I'm legally living in Stuy town as an "occupant," where Celia Slom lives and only a couple blocks away from Spielvogel's folks' place.

    Polly Shulman

Polly is working at Discover magazine as an editor and writer. She lives in Brooklyn.

  • Celia (Slom) Vimont

Celia is the director of editorial services at the American Lung Association in NYC. She and her husband Greg (a photographer) had a son, Benjamin, in July 1996.

    Email: GVimont@NYC.Pipeline.Com

    Peter Spielvogel

I work in high-tech marketing for a small software company that serves the semiconductor manufacturing industry. After completing my MBA in 1990, I moved to Silicon Valley. Last year I got married to a local Californian.

In my spare time, I enjoy road biking (occasionally mountain biking), trail running, and enjoying the California sunshine.

I frequently see Tom Cheng, who lives about 3 miles from me, also in Sunnyvale. He too works in high-tech marketing. We get together on weekends to lift weights, then barbeque.

    Email: PJS@RocketMail.Com

    Anjali Tate

Anjali writes: "I completed my residency in Ob/Gyn at Stanford University in 1993 and now work for Kaiser in San Jose. My husband of four months, cat, and I live in Cupertino, south of San Francisco. I'd love to hear from people."

    Email: Anjali.Tate@NCal.KAIPerm.Org

    Anthony White

Tony works as a computer consultant in the financial industry. His glamorous jobs have included assignments in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Burlington, Houston, and Toledo. Between consulting jobs he often disappears to South America, Mexico, or the Carribean.

Tony has also spent a couple of years living and working on Staten Island, which he's rather touchy about.

Despite the fact that he recently bought his own 200 MHz NT workstation with 128 MB of RAM, communication with Tony is usually best accomplished with pre-smoke signal technology. He still doesn't have an email address.

    David Wallace

I'm a business and news reporter for various magazines -- Home Office Computing, Wired, World Trade -- and primarily as a correspondent for The New York Times and its online version, CyberTimes. I've specialized in the consumer impact of info-technology so I've been hip-deep in the lawsuit involving AOL's efforts to block junk E-mail. I also plan to return to Cuba this winter (I visited there in 1993 and 1994) to examine how E-mail is changing life there. And any top-secret, corporate intrigue or story ideas from networked alums out there are always welcome.

I'm cohabitational with girlfriend Lauren Goldberg, who works dishing out grant money on Health and Human Services programs for the Pew Charitable Trusts here in Philadelphia. No pets, no kids, no shirt, no shoes, no service.

    Email:DWallace@Worldnet.ATT.Net.

    Zoe Sybil (Warwick) Forsyth

Zoe is assistant professor of Psychology at University of Maryland Baltimore County where she teaches Research Method/Statistics. Her husband is a pilot for Fedex, and they had a son, Ryan, on July 7, 1996.

She went to Duke as an undergrad, spent two years as a Research Technician there and ultimately got her Ph. D. in Experimental Psychology. She did a two year post-doc fellowship at McMasters University in Ontario. She's been married since 1994, and they enjoy sailing, skiing and traveling. They are expecting a baby this month.
