Abstract:
Magnetic recording systems are the main mass storage devices for digital data. In present recording systems, medium noise is the primary source of noise and consequently it limits the storage density of the device. We propose a new model for medium noise and a novel system architecture designed to exploit certain signal and spatial dependencies of medium noise in order to compensate for it. We define an optimality criterion for the system design and present a detailed analysis of our design for both signal-independent and signal-dependent medium noise. Simulations of the proposed system performed using both simulated and experimental data show promising results.
