The Océano project

INFRASTRUCTURE:

Océano deploys a distributed subsystem, "GulfStream", to provide
comprehensive monitoring of the availability ("liveness") of the servers,
switches, firewalls, and network adapters. GulfStream will also manage the
configuration of the VLANs and firewalls in support of dynamic resource
re-allocation. Océano has a daemon running on every node. These daemons can
communicate directly with each other and, where possible, "eavesdrop" on
the activity of the (kernel-level) communication stack of the node. This
eavesdropping is used to determine which nodes, network adapters, and LAN
switches are operational and responsive and, by elimination, which network
adapters, nodes, and LAN switches are non-responsive (i.e., can be
considered to be dead). In addition, Océano has power control facilities to
provide for node boot-up, reboot, and shutdown.
