FAQ for IBM Transcoding Proxy Demonstration

  • Java applet doesn't appear: After invocation, the scrollbar should  pop-up next to the browser.  If it doesn't appear, check to see if a new Netscape  icon has appeared in the Windows bar of icons located on the lower edge of your  screen.  If so, then the scrollbar is running but not yet visible.  To make the  scrollbar visible, i) left-click on the icon, or ii) right-click on the  icon and click Restore, or iii) right-click on the icon and click Maximize  followed by clicking on the middle of three boxes in the upper right corner to resize the  window.
  • Java applet appears with buttons/slidebar/text  missing: Currently,  the Java applet is not working fully with Internet Explorer.   We suggest you  use Netscape instead.
  • Caching questions: Your browser may be locally caching the images you  receive, to improve response time. When you revisit a page, this caching can result in  some images being shown at one transcoding level and other images being shown at a  different transcoding level.  To force the browser to display all images at the same  and most recent transcoding level, hold down the Shift key while you click the Reload button.   This will tell the browser to obtain original images from the Web server  rather than the local cache.  Another approach is to disable caching completely in  your browser, i.e. set all cache sizes to zero.  A final note: transcoded images are  not cached at the proxy.
