Enterprise MPEG-4

These projects are focused on bringing rich media applications using open standards-based MPEG-4 content to Enterprise business solutions for Digital Media. WebSphere with J2EE and EMB (Enterprise Media Beans), as well as portal environments are candidate recipients of this work.

Adaptable MPEG-4

Adaptable MPEG-4 is an EMB based MPEG-4 solution that facilitates seamless access to content by providing scene-level (or application level) adaptation of rich-media business data. An MPEG-4 scene consists of a structured collection of independently coded interactive media objects (e.g. video, audio, graphics, and text) which are ordered in time and space. Being described as objects an MPEG-4 scene can be adapted on-the-fly by adding, removing, or replacing any objects in the scene and the structure allows varying levels of granularity. Our focus in this project is on scene-adaptability. A simple example of scene adaptation would be to send to the hearing-impaired client a closed-captioned video. The text could be in different languages with varying font sizes making it less than effective to create and store all the possible combinations. Based on knowledge of the client and their device etc, an appropriate text object can be selected and a scene structure created such that the client will render the text superimposed above the video and hence the scene is thus adaptated. This scene adaptation can also work in conjunction with existing delivery solutions to create a multi-tiered adaptive solution from application/client adaptation down to delivery adaptation. Scalable video, the ability to add or remove layers of video to augment quality, frame rate etc, can play a useful role.

Autonomic MPEG-4 TOP

Our Autonomic MPEG-4 project seeks to apply the principles of autonomic computing and elements of its architecture to Enterprise Digital Media. A set of policies provide rules and guidelines. We monitor the requirements, conditions and constraints of the client, network and the servers. Based on the available information, we construct an executable plan to create and deliver customized MPEG-4 content to the client.
