Knowledge Management
The rapid growth of the Internet has resulted in an enormous number
of heterogeneous and often unstructured electronic documents. In this scenario,
knowledge management, especially for business intelligence, highlights
a need for tools that can synthesize and organize knowledge on any given
topic of interest from a corpus of documents.
Research Issues
Traditionally, information retrieval (IR) systems have been used to
access information about a specific topic from a document corpus.
IR systems usually return ranked lists of documents that are relevant to the user's
query. These lists are often unwieldy and ambiguous. As a consequence,
the knowledge that a user can acquire from such systems depends predominantly
on a user's skill to query the system and to assimilate the results. Moreover,
traditional IR systems cannot handle heterogeneous and semi-structured
document corpora. Therefore, there is a need for efficient KM systems that
can organize and access knowledge contained in such corpora. Thus, the
major research issues in knowledge management include extraction and organization
of knowledge from unstructured and heterogeneous corpora, and the representation
of this knowledge in a form that is easily accessible by users. Maintenance
and periodic updates of the knowledge base also play an important role.
The activities of India Research Laboratory (IRL) in the knowledge management are centered around
following two main areas:
