Biographical sketch of author

Thomas G. Zimmerman IBM Research Division, Almaden Research Center, 650 Harry Road, San Jose, California 95120 (electronic mail: tzim@almaden.ibm.com). Mr. Zimmerman is a research staff member in the Computer Science Department of the IBM Almaden Research Center, working on new human-machine interface devices and paradigms. He received his B.S. degree in humanities and engineering (1980) and his M.S. degree in media science (1995) from MIT. His interest in music led him to cofound Breakaway Technologies, where he designed a voice-controlled synthesizer and later patented several musical devices to help people sing and play music. In the early 1980s he invented the DataGlove and cofounded VPL Research with Jaron Lanier. In 1993, in collaboration with Neil Gershenfeld, he developed the electric field Personal Area Network at the MIT Media Lab, work he continues at IBM. His interactive exhibits can be seen at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C., and the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
