Biographical sketches of authors

David A. Thompson   IBM Research Division, Almaden Research Center, 650 Harry Road, San Jose, California 95120 (davidt@almaden.ibm.com). Dr. Thompson received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh. In 1965, he became an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Carnegie-Mellon University. From 1968 to 1987 he worked at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York, where his work was concerned with magnetic memory, magnetic recording, and magnetic transducers. Dr. Thompson became an IBM Fellow in 1980; he is currently Director of the Advanced Magnetic Recording Laboratory at the IBM Almaden Research Laboratory.

John S. Best   IBM Storage Systems Division, 5600 Cottle Road, San Jose, California 95193 (bestjs@us.ibm.com). Dr. Best received his B.S. degree in physics and his Ph.D. in applied physics, both from the California Institute of Technology. He joined the IBM San Jose Research Laboratory (now Almaden Research Center) in 1979. He has worked in various areas of storage technology since that time. In 1994 he became IBM Research Division Vice President, Storage, and Director of the IBM Almaden Research Center. Dr. Best is currently Vice President of Technology, IBM Storage Systems Division.
