In 1986 J. G. Bednorz and K. A. Müller showed that a new class of metallic perovskite-type copper-based oxides had superconducting transition temperatures of 35K. This discovery sparked an enormous amount of research and development worldwide. In 1987 Bednorz and Müller were awarded the Nobel Prize. In order to further advance this field after the initial outpouring of theoretical and experimental work, the IBM Europe Institute organized a workshop in Oberlech, Austria. Bednorz and Müller were the guest editors of this issue of the Journal, which published 26 papers based on the lectures presented at the workshop.
