The Java platform has the potential to revolutionize computing, with its promise of "write once, run anywhere"
development. This will enable application developers to efficiently develop an application only once, therefore
minimizing or eliminating the overhead associated with its porting to multiple platforms. In order to realize this
potential, Java solutions must exhibit satisfactory levels of performance. As a result of this Java potential, IBM
has internally established a multi-platform, cross-divisional team to address Java performance issues, specifically
Java server application performance. The team has developed and implemented a suite of Java server benchmarks to
address performance issues and to enable Java application performance to be competitive with legacy applications.
The team includes representatives from the Software Group, Server Group, and Research, including the AIX, OS/390,
OS/400, NT and OS/2 platform owners, Java performance teams in Research (including the Haifa CG team, the Tokyo JIT
team and the JASPER team), JDBC/DB2 teams in Toronto and Santa Teresa, and the WebSphere performance team. For more
information on this multi-divisional team, contact Nancy Burns, the Java Performance Team lead.
