IBM India Research Lab holds first National Autonomic Computing Workshop
IBM India Research Laboratory organized the first national Autonomic Computing (AC) Workshop in its New Delhi and Bangalore locations on March 28 and March 30, 2007 respectively. The event was studded with participation from IBM-Tivoli, IBM-Research, and selected academics from prestigious academic institutions. The event met its objective of promoting awareness & cooperation among Indian researchers interested in AC (a) by elucidating state-of-the-art AC research and technology and (b) by delineating collaboration, networking and funding opportunities in AC.
Both the New Delhi and Bangalore event concluded with a group discussion session which allowed for a candid exchange of ideas to further the goals of the workshop. The workshops were organized by Ric Telford, VP, Autonomic Computing, Tivoli and Rajarshi Das, IBM Watson Research and were hosted by India Research Laboratory.
IRL Bangalore event, the participants were drawn from leading schools of higher learning such as the IISc (Shalabh Bhatnagar, Jayant Haritsa), IIIT-Bangalore (Shrisha Rao), IIIT-Hyderabad (Kamal Karlapalem), IIT Mumbai (Umesh Bellur), and SD College of Engg. Dharwad (J.V. Vadavi, U.P.Kulkarni). The talks evinced keen interest from the workshop participants and covered not just specific technical projects but also the breadth of work being done at the various institutions. Dr. Guru Banavar, Associate Director, IRL, Bangalore's introductory remarks introduced the work being done at IRL Bangalore and also set the context for the services research work being done as another facet of AC. Krishna Kummamuru's talk on Knowledge Management went into specifics of one services related project. The talks by C. Mohan and HP Raghunandan and the subsequent group discussion focused on improving the IBM-academia collaborations in India and threw up several specific suggestions.
At IRL New Delhi event, the institutions represented were IIT-Delhi (Prof. Pankaj Jalote and Prof. Jayadeva), IIT-Bombay (Prof. Umesh Bellur and Prof. Varsha Apte), and University of Delhi. From IBM-Tivoli, Ric Telford gave an overview of AC with particular emphasis on how the field is maturing and making an impact in commercial IT-environments. Steve White from IBM Watson Research presented IBM’s system management technology outlook by detailing how recent advances in IT would revolutionize IT-driven business 5-10 years from today. Rajarshi Das from IBM Watson Research highlighted some of the research projects in AC at IBM Research while Anidya Neogi from IRL grounded the discussion by detailing some of his experiences in managing real-world IT systems. Profs. Pankaj Jalote, Umesh Bellur and Varsha Apte each presented an overview of their research efforts that, respectively, centered on performance management, self-healing and self-configuration in large distributed systems. Prof. Jayadeva on the other hand focused on much smaller systems where he presented his work on AC at the chip level.
