Knowledge and Information Management

The knowledge and information management group is engaged in developing next-generation technologies in the areas of knowledge acquisition and learning, knowledge representation, refinement of knowledge assets, information extraction, information storage, information retrieval, information integration, XML databases, and master data management. In particular, we are working on several projects that address different aspects of these technologies, such as context-oriented information integration, business intelligence across structured and unstructured data, semantic search, and problem determination in databases, and have been building intelligent information management applications and solutions by applying these technologies in the context of financial, telecommunication and health-care sectors, as well as in contact centers and customer relationship management.

In the area of human-computer interaction, we are working on core speech technologies such as Hindi speech recognition as well as innovative solutions based on such technologies. One is the automatic evaluation of a person’s spoken language skills such as pronunciation, grammar and comprehension, to be used in hiring or training agents in BPO industries. The solution involves various novel technologies such as syllable stress detection and phone discrimination. We are also working on pervasive user interface technologies for developing countries (where people are not IT-savyy and do not have access to the Internet) and on assistive technologies such as speech-enabled browsers and embedded text-to-speech synthesis for devices.

The members of this group bring together ideas from many diverse disciplines such as machine learning, information retrieval, search, natural language processing, data management, artificial intelligence and text analysis. Some of our current projects are summarized below.

  1. Context-oriented information integration
  2. Automatic obligation enforcement for privacy policy compliance
  3. Policy management for autonomic data management
  4. National Health Data Network (NHDN)
  5. Automation of Analysis of Contact Center Data for Business Intelligence
  6. Infosphere
  7. Manthun: Churning out useful information from unstructured text

  8. Sensei
