This research area covers activities in business optimization, machine learning, predictive modeling, and related business intelligence infrastructure and solutions. We are highly interdisciplinary in our approach, incorporating techniques from optimization, theory and algorithms, artificial intelligence, database management, stochastic analysis, pattern recognition and statistics.
We work closely with other IBM units working in these area, including various research groups active in optimization, knowledge discovery and data mining, Software Group's data management and business intelligence solutions group, and Global Service's business consulting services.
Our mission is to develop effective tools and techniques for enabling a wide variety of business optimization, data analytics and data mining based applications and solutions. We aim to achieve this by:
- Developing algorithms for complex constrained combinatorial, deterministic and stochastic optimization problems.
- Developing scalable and automated machine learning and statistical modeling based data mining techniques for extracting actionable insights from data.
- Engaging in consulting and services to drive our research agenda for developing novel predictive modeling solutions for data-rich problems in business and industry, and to have data mining impact business and industry problem-solving in new and unique ways.
|
Our current activities include:
- Basic Research: cost-sensitive learning, active learning, reinforcement learning, regularization methods for statistical modeling, stochastic linear and integer programming, local search methods.
- Solutions and Services: analytics for market intelligence and competitive insights, demand forecasting, opportunity targeting analytics, call center operational modeling, pricing analytics, strategic planning and budgeting,
etc.

Our research activities generally result in technical reports, conference papers, and articles in technical journals and magazines. Our development activities generally result in optimization and data mining software as well as business intelligence applications. Some of our software has become part of IBM's product and solution offerings, while other becomes part of our asset base that we employ in our advanced solutions and services projects.
