---- SRIM 2000 ---- INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for Win-95 and Win-98 systems: First Installation (4.2MB) If you have an old version of SRIM (versions 2000.00-2000.24) you must first REMOVE the old program using "Add/Remove Programs" in your Control Panel folder. Do not just delete the old programs, because you must remove the Register entries for SRIM. * Download the files and place in a temporary directory. * Execute SRIMFULL.exe to unfold the SRIM files. * Find and run SETUP.EXE in the temporary directory. Initial installations will require restarting your computer to integrate SRIM with Windows. Later upgrades of SRIM will not require rebooting. To run SRIM 2000, Click "Start" and select SRIM 2000 from the Programs group. You may make a desktop icon by Right-clicking on the desktop. Select New+Shortcut. Command line = "C:\Program Files\SRIM 2000\SRIM 2000.EXE", Name = SRIM 2000, Finish. ==================================================== Upgrade Installation (1.4MB) You may only use the Upgrade if you have previously installed SRIM 2000.30 or later versions. * Copy the file SRIMUPGR.exe into the SRIM directory. * Execute SRIMUPGR.exe. This will replace all files with new versions. * Erase SRIMUPGR.exe ---------------------------------------------------- INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for Win-NT systems: For a First Installation, follow all the instructions above. One font file, Linedraw.TTF, must be installed in the Win-NT font directory: C:\WINNT\FONTS. This font is only necessary for some of the SRIM Help and output windows, and is not required for SRIM to execute. Once the font is installed, it must made active with the Font Manager in the MS-Control Panel application. If you do not install this font, some of the windows may contain unusual characters. ---------------------------------------------------- The Instruction Manual for TRIM(DOS) is included as two WORD files: SRIM96A.DOC and SRIM96B.DOC. The first file is the primary manual, while the second file is the Appendix which includes examples of all the possible output files. This manual is useful for the scientific background to TRIM and for special applications. Labels for the SRIM disks are included in a file: SRIMLAB.DOC (MS-Word). ==================================================== Trouble Shooting: (1) Errors during Setup installation produces an error similar to: "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\*.OCX could not be installed". This error occurs because some applications change special Windows programs to "Read-only" so that they can not be accidently erased. These files are not part of the Windows operating system, but may be used by several applications. SRIM will upgrade any of these files which is older than the one needed by SRIM. Microsoft believes that all upgrades are backward-compatible, i.e. they will still work with programs which were installed using older versions. The files which may be affected are: COMCOL32.oxc COMCTL32.oxc COMDLG32.oxc MSFLXGRD.oxc RICHTX32.oxc TABCTL32.oxc You must note which files give this error. Then do the following: (1) Open Windows Explorer (2) Open C:\Windows\System (3) Right-click on the file causing the error. (4) Rename the file to save it, e.g. change COMCOL32.oxc -> COMCOL32.ox2. (5) Execute Setup.exe for SRIM again. No error messages should appear. If a problem still persists, then return these files to their original names. ----------------------------------------------------- (2) Problem: Some of the Help panels in SRIM contain strange characters. This occurs if you do not have the font MS-LineDraw as an active font. This font is included in most Microsoft software packages. It is the font for the ASCII character set, and is required for some text windows in SRIM. It is NOT required to run any of the programs. You must activate this font using the "Fonts" icon in your Windows Control Panel. ----------------------------------------------------- (3) Registry problems. These errors take various forms, but they all are caused by having an early version of SRIM (versions 2000.00-2000.24) still in your Registry, and Windows is getting confused about the support programs required for SRIM. The only way out of this is to: * First see if there is an old version of SRIM listed in your "Add/Remove Programs" (this program is in your Control Panel folder). If SRIM is listed, then REMOVE it. Skip the rest of these instructions, and reinstall the full version of SRIM. If there is no earlier version of SRIM, or if there is an earlier version and you can't remove it, then follow these instructions: * Save a copy of your Registry. * Use: START + RUN. Enter the name REGEDIT to execute this program. * Click on REGISTER. Click on EXPORT REGISTRY FILE. Save it with a new name. * Still in REGEDIT, use EDIT + FIND to search for all entries to SRIM. It may be in: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/App Paths/SRIM 2000" * Delete all references to SRIM. * Save the corrected Registry. Quit the REGEDIT program. Reinstall the full version of SRIM-2000. ----------------------------------------------------- (4) If you do NOT use Windows with ASCII characters (i.e. 8-bits/character as in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, etc.) there is a problem. Languages which require 16-bit letters (Japanese, Arabic, Russian, etc.) can not use the parts of SRIM which require typed input. You can solve this problem by changing you Regional Setting to English or any European language. This is done by: "My Computer" -> "Control Panel" -> "Regional Settings". Then reset you system to any European language. Although the system will tell you to reboot your PC, this is not necessary for some systems. There is no possible fix for this problem that can be incorporated into SRIM. (I am indebted to Firas Rida, Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia, for helping to fix this problem.) -----------------------------------------------------
