IBM Research is actively pursuing many aspects of the healthcare delivery system and its evolution through the use of advanced information technology.

• The Clinical Information System provides a simple and flexible interface for clinicians to review, update, and manage patient records.
• The Managed Care Information System is a tool for care managers to better serve health providers and members, and to manage the the complex set of regulations and benefits plans associated with managed care.
• The Home Healthcare Support System provides a way for patients with long term health problems to get the treatment information and support they need while undergoing treatment at home.

Research is also using computers to analyze medical images to enable physicians to take full advantage of the information found in them.

• This work enables physicians to better visualize the anatomy they are treating.
• Advanced image processing techniques are used to remove distortion from medical images.
• Computer registration techniques are used to align complex 3D images taken before surgery, with the actual anatomy of the patient in the operating room.
