Prior to Professor Josef Raviv's tragic death in October 1999, he was a long time veteran of the Science & Technology Research.
A few of his many outstanding accomplishments included:
- Director, Science & Technology and the Haifa Research Lab, IBM Research Division.
- Professor and founding head of Engineering School Hebrew University, Jerusalem.
- Governor of ICCC (International Council for Computer Communications).
- President of IPA (Information Processing Association of Israel).
- IEEE Life Fellow.
Professor Raviv held membership on the board of directors of several companies, and acted as chairman for many professional conferences both in Israel and abroad.
Additionally, he received numerous awards including: Collins Radio fellowship, Ford Foundation fellowship, IBM Outstanding Contribution award, IBM First Invention award, IBM Second Invention award, IFIP Silver Core, IEEE Fellow, Lifetime Achievement award (Information Processing Association of Israel, 1995), Golden Jubilee Paper award (IEEE Information Theory Society, 1998), and IEEE Life Fellow, 1998.
