IT Simplification and User Experience

Virtualization and Systems Management

Policy-Based Management

The complexity of advanced system management applications inhibits their adoption by customers. Policy-driven management can simplify this task.

In many of today's platforms, policy configuration is both complex and demanding. Each tool introduces its own terminology, user experience, and behavior. These problems discourage the use of policies and the many advanced management capabilities they provide.

The policy-based management engine developed in HRL provides a single point of control to easily manage resources using intuitive, high-level policies. The policy engine radically simplifies the definition of policies using predefined templates and action patterns. This simplified user experience makes the policy management appealing to the end user.  The architecture allows the easy incorporation of managers across disciplines (e.g., performance, availability, power, security).

Policy engine demo

In this recorded demo, the user specifies information about his business (e.g., work hours, low-cost servers, etc.). He then uses the templates provided by the policy engine to define the policies he wishes to enforce and the durations in which they should be enforced. At the specified times, the engine starts and stops policy enforcements as required.
The demo shows the console of the policy engine and the resource console of the managed environment in which resource changes are shown.
