Project Timeline

The WAP Hosting project was established in mid 2000 by IGS EMEA. The Haifa Research Lab was asked to join the effort and contribute to the project.

A meeting was held in Frankfurt in June 2000 to kick off IBM's WAP Hosting project. At this meeting, the WAP Hosting project was divided into three phases:

  • Phase 1 - Development of a basic Nokia NT-based WAP hosting application by September 2000, including:
    • Security
    • Internet access
    • E-mail access
  • Phase 2 - Adaptation of the WAP hosting application (developed in Phase I) for GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), AIX, and IBM Secureway Wireless Gateway.
  • Phase 3 - Development of a WAP hosting application for GSM 3G (third generation), including UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). This will include support for advanced features, such as personalization and location-based information.

HRL researchers are working on:

  • Secure WAP hosting
  • GPRS and UMTS protocols, and how they affect our work
  • Commerce and payments
