Overview
The establishment of the Regional Healthcare Information Organization (RHIO) opens the way for creating new IT-based medical services for the benefit of patients, physicians, and researchers. The Medical Summarization service will provide a summary of a patient's longitudinal Electronic Health Record (her) in a single, easy-to-browse, easy-to-understand view of a current patient's medical situation.
The Medical Summarization service is a representation of advanced services that are expected to emerge on top of medical integration systems such as IHII. The service takes its input from the patient's historical medical records and creates a patient information summary. These records are generated by different care delivery organizations, over a long period of time, and collected into back-end digital archives such as the IHII solution. Patient records cover multiple treatments for multiple conditions over the patient's life time.
The Medical Summarization service needs to overcome two significant challenges:
- Integrating a large volume of information and providing easy access to this information.
- Preventing information overload on medical personnel who access the data.
The service will address both challenges by offering multiple views to the data. Where applicable, views will be generated using machine learning techniques. Possible views might include:
- Short textual summary of the patient's major illnesses
- Sets of specific test results, taken over a period of time
- Gathering information about a specific patient's condition, incorporating information generated from different organizations
- Ranking of lab results according to their significance level
- Gathering information pertaining to a specific specialist or field. This view may be implemented by dynamically observing the usage of the deployed system by medical personnel and generalizing common user actions. This view utilizes machine learning techniques for understanding caregiver behavior and for data analysis
The Medical Summarization service is a joint project of two Haifa groups: Haifa Healthcare & Life Science and Haifa Machine Learning.
