Hierarchical Aggregation System for Advanced Metering Infrastructures
Our work defines a dynamic intelligent conflation/aggregation system for data originating from an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). By dynamically performing a smart collection and aggregation of AMI data, the system supports the transmission of data corresponding to a massive number of measurements.
Data transmitted from metering devices goes through a pre-processing phase based on clustering. The aggregation of the data is done through a hierarchical network, where the root corresponds to the operating center. In each time interval, the operator receives a reduced and aggregated view of the data at the end of the pre-processing and transmission phases. Through this reduction, several goals are achieved:
- Efficient use of bandwidth resources of the underlying network.
- Reduced transmission power resulting in improved sensors' battery lifetime and reduced average consumed energy .
- Faster processing and analysis of the massive number of measurements performed during the current interval.
The work uses a clustering based aggregation system performed over the different levels of the AMI hierarchical network for computation and data transmission in steady state, as well as in case of irregular events.
