SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 11, 2001--3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS - news) and IBM today announced the companies would work together to integrate IBM's InfiniBand(TM) chip technology -- known as InfiniBlue -- into future networking solutions offered by 3Com. 3Com intends to market InfiniBand connectivity products that will allow the next generation of InfiniBand-enabled servers and existing PCI/PCI-X-based servers to seamlessly connect to an InfiniBand network.
InfiniBand is a new high-speed common I/O standard defined by leading companies in the industry. It utilizes channel-based switch fabric architecture with scaleable performance from 500 Megabytes per second to 6 Gigabytes per second per link. InfiniBand will replace PCI and PCI-X bus-based technology, dramatically improving performance, reliability and availability of next generation servers. This helps customers reduce the total cost of ownership of data processing and networking equipment.
"3Com and IBM bring complementary strengths to the InfiniBand networking frontier," said Paul Rudnick, vice president and general manager, desktop and server division, Business Connectivity Company, 3Com Corporation. "InfiniBand-based networking architecture and products hold the potential to dramatically eclipse today's server performance, much like Pentium processors and PCI technology surpassed Minicomputers a decade ago."
"IBM's leading-edge 4X InfiniBand technology will help customers realize the true potential of the InfiniBand architecture through products that incorporate high integration, flexibility and functionality," said Bruce Beers, vice president, Server Business Line, IBM Microelectronics. "3Com is an ideal company to develop and bring to market a host of end-to-end InfiniBand-based products that will help meet the wide-range needs of the ever growing demands of network connectivity."
