Metabolic Syndrome IBM-Lithuania Project

Overview

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of medical disorders including central obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, and dyslipidemia. These medical disorders are associated with increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. Nevertheless, there is no universally accepted definition of metabolic syndrome and the pathogenesis of the increased cardiovascular risk is not completely understood.

This project is a collaboration between researchers in IBM and Lithuania for studying the association between metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk using advanced machine learning and statistical methods. The first phase of the project focuses on investigating the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease by analyzing longitudinal clinical data of patients suspected of having metabolic syndrome. The knowledge gained from this study will be used to develop a clinical decision support system for managing the care of patients having metabolic syndrome / cardiovascular risk factors. The second phase of the project will focus on investigating the dependence of cardiovascular risk factors and treatment effectiveness on genetic profile and various bio-markers.
