Vigilant (Virtual Guest Inspection, Learning, and Control)

Overview

Performance monitoring of computer systems involves large volumes of data, very little human supervision, and the need for high accuracy. In other words, this is a perfect environment for machine learning. The Vigilant project successfully applies this insight to a variety of domains and platforms. It performs hang-detection of the entire OS as viewed by the hypervisor (Xen), identification of restart events as viewed by the storage system, detection of livelock conditions as viewed by the kernel (Linux and AIX), optimization of network traffic for storage products (FastBack), and more. To date, this work has resulted in four academic papers, seven patent applications, and an IBM research technical accomplishment award.
