Our implementation is based on off-the-shelf provisioning software designed for managing Web-based business applications. We adapt this system to monitor game and system performance and automatically provision server resources in response to changing conditions. One of our primary activities is to identify and implement the necessary extensions to the provisioning software to support an on demand gaming infrastructure environment. In addition, to make the platform easier to use, we have implemented a number of reusable component services that relieve publishers of the task of reimplementing commonly used functions for each game. In particular, we have focused on bandwidth-efficient content distribution services to reduce the costs of distributing large game patches and content, as well as portal services to enable publishers to automatically deploy their games on the platform with the appropriate resource usage policies. We demonstrate the feasibility of the platform by provisioning multiple instances of a popular action game.
