MIKE VALVO: Well, I learned chess at an early age because of my father's only hobby. I knew the moves at perhaps age seven or eight. I teethd on the pieces, I'm told. There's no knight's ears, anymore, on this ivory set we had. However, I didn't take the game seriously till I was about 11, when I was home sick from school one weak and I read Lasker's Manual of Chess and just devoured it. And it became an aesthetic pastime. Maybe it wasn't music, but it created joy in my heart. I really loved the game, and later on I discovered that I learned the game because it was my father's only hobby, and it was to get his love and attention. And it wasn't until he died and I stopped playing for three years that, boing, I made the connection. 31 fxe3
