Game 3, white
35.Bxe5+
Commentary for white move 35:
YASSER SEIRAWAN: I must say that my initial reaction is one of
approval. I am going to get to Steve's question, but the idea
behind g5 is that after fxg6 en passant, this is -- whoops.
Garry has responded.
GK MOVE: 35 Bxe5
YASSER SEIRAWAN: What I wanted to see is after fxg6 Bxh6
was one
of the reasons why in the press room we didn't get to play g5
right away. Probably Deep Blue would have answered Bxg6 and
then Bxh6 is possible because of the move Nxd3 and there are no
long -- and you are no longer hitting that d6 pawn.
MAURICE ASHLEY: Much nicer idea to get that d3 pawn for the h6
pawn.
YASSER SEIRAWAN: Yes.
MAURICE ASHLEY: Because the d3 pawn is the linchpin of white's
position, so instead Kasparov has played the move Bxe5, bishop
capture knight, and we can certainly expect the move dxe5
although we're somewhat surprised Deep Blue is taking so long
in this position since it's pretty much clear it's the only
move to be considering right now. And Kasparov making some
faces, shaking his head. We're not sure what that will mean
for the moment. But this comes as a bit of a surprise to me,
Yaz. What if after this move f6 were to be played, what do you
rate black's chances of bringing any of his pieces into play?
YASSER SEIRAWAN: Yes, the position is quite blockaded. Let's
just conduct our poll for the moment before I --
MAURICE ASHLEY: We have three things going on, the poll, the
blocked position, and Steve Shutt's position.
YASSER SEIRAWAN: Garry is going to win, the true believers?
Well, we lost some of them.
Deep Blue is going to win? Changed some of them.
And finally who just thinks the position is a draw?
MAURICE ASHLEY: Uh-oh.
YASSER SEIRAWAN: Okay, so we're getting kind of mixed
feelings.
First of all, it's inconceivable to me that Deep Blue could lose
the position, because all the files are block cadeed. The
bishop is fine on b5, the knight is fine on d5, but you can't
can't put more pressure on that pawn on a5. That bishop is
going to defend it. It's virtually impossible for you to play
the move h2-h4 because this bishop on d8, once again, defends
that square h4 so that after g5xh4 you may not win it back. I
think that was what motivated you to feel that the move f5-f6
might be the right way to go.
The problem with the move right offhand is that you do release
this bishop, the bishop on h7 could come to g6 for active
duty. It seems to me that the position is just too closed.
But if I had to choose, I think that Deep Blue at the moment
has the better chances.
