Game 3, black
32...a5
Commentary for black move 32:
MAURICE ASHLEY: In this game you didn't have to capture the
material, if I recall?
YASSER SEIRAWAN: No, but I want to! (Audience laughter.) I
sure wanted those guys, let me tell you something.
DB MOVE: 32...a5.
MAURICE ASHLEY: /STPHEFD your suggestion of f7-f6, he played
a6-a5. Deep Blue is serious about taking that pawn. Because
everybody seems to have come back to defend that pawn. The
bishop on d8 is defending the pawn, the rook on a8. A bit of a
unusual move, weakening some squares in the position. It looks
b5 is in need of support.
YASSER SEIRAWAN: Indeed one of the nice things about this rook
on b8 is that it's on an open file where it has some
potential. Right now all the key squares are covered, and with
this last move, understandable move, by the way, pushing the
pawn forward, Nimzovich, Aaron Nimzovich called this the
passed
pawn's lust to expand. And the passed pawn moves up the board
so that it gets closetory promotion. But it has weakened b5
and Garry could put his bishop there closing the b-file. I
don't know that the move a5 was needed right away. And I'll go
back once again and say that f6 was a possibility.
