Game 3, white
14.Be3
Commentary for white move 14:
YASSER SEIRAWAN: I think that h7-h6 the computer's last move
was
probably a preventative one. It may have perceived that white
may have gone h2-h4 with the not-so-disguised intention of
g2-g4 winning the bishop. So I think this is a reasonable
preventative move. I think what we're going to see now with
Garry is the move Bc1-e3, trying to give up this dark squareed
bishop. Deep Blue's knight on d4 has a beautiful positionally
placed night, aggressive, great outpost, protected by the pawn
in the center of the board, that e5 pawn, and the nice point
behind the move Be3 is let's just give a random move for Deep
Blue. c7-c6. Then after a move like Bxd4 de Nc3-e2 attacking
that pawn on d4, c7-c5. Now we'll see the true extent of
Garry's strategy which is to flood the king-side with an
avalanche of pawns. The idea of g3-g4 Bh5-g6, a move like
Bg2-4 3.
GK MOVE: 14 Be3
MAURICE ASHLEY: Garry has indeed played the move Be3. We
see
how you're very familiar with the English opening. Why don't
you just tell us the moves of the rest of the game.
YASSER SEIRAWAN: You'll have to go to the IBM web site to get
that.
MAURICE ASHLEY: What was the mood of the team today,
Murray?
Deep Blue of course didn't care less after it was told Qe3,
zip, zip, zip, yeah, it was a draw, yeah Garry resigned, yeah,
I won. Next. Right? What about you guys? How did it feel?
MURRAY CAMPBELL: It's certainly nice to not have the problem of
how do you handle the news that it was a draw. It's very nice
to not have that problem. And, you know, Garry will have to
display great nerves in order to not let such a thing bother
him.
MAURICE ASHLEY: Is that what it is, it was a draw, good, Garry's
upset, I don't know if he's real upset.
MURRAY CAMPBELL: In a sense that's of course true, one more
problem to worry about. It's too bad that such a nice game was
spoiled by this little trick at the end, but I think that
doesn't detract from the quality of the play up till that
point.
YASSER SEIRAWAN: The achievement.
MAURICE ASHLEY: What about Joel Benjamin? You guys are not
professional chess players. Joel Benjamin is. Was he a little
bit more disappointed in the purity of the game, considering
that he is a chess Grandmaster?
MURRAY CAMPBELL: He didn't mention any problems. You take
the
win however you get it, and --
MAURICE ASHLEY: Sounds like Joel.
MURRAY CAMPBELL: He's pretty practical about such things.
YASSER SEIRAWAN: I must say for myself, obviously I have won
games that I most assuredly didn't deserve. My opponent may
have forgotten about the fact that his flag was hanging or
something happened and I blundered into victory, and I
certainly celebrated quite well after such a win. Yourselves,
what's the mood of the team? You're looking at 1-1 in the
best-of-six match. Philadelphia, history is repeating itself,
victories in games one and two by both sides. You've got four
games left.
Are you going to drine any draws this year?
