Game 1, white

Commentary for white move 13:

Mr. SEIRAWAN: That's very interesting. You might talk about style for a moment. Garry is definitely not playing his style of chess. He very much has adapted his play, both in Philadelphia and obviously this match. This is not typical Garry Kasparov chess. Garry Kasparov is a phenomenal, phenomenal tacktician.

Mr. ASHLEY: He's gotten up from the board again by the way. So clearly he's confident that he's not in any trouble, that he knows exactly what he needs to do.

Mr. SEIRAWAN: Well, the last two moves of Deep Blue probably inspired it. The move Nh4 has Maurice says is setting up the move g4. That would force the bishop on h5 to retreat, and then when the knight on h4 would capture the bishop that would retreat on g6, that would force f7xg6, a very unpleasant doubleing of the pawns in front of Deep Blue's king.

Mr. SEIRAWAN: What Garry has said my threat is g3-g4, I intend to carry this threat out. What are you going to do about it?

Mr. SEIRAWAN: What I am sure he hopes that Deep Blue will do is to play the move g7-g5. That would force Garry perhaps to retreat his knight, and at the same time Deep Blue would have seriously weakened his king.

Mr. ASHLEY: Mike, I don't remember last year how it went, but how often did Garry get up from the board during the games?

Mr. VALVO: Quite often. I would say about ten times a game.

Mr. ASHLEY: So he's following suit now? There's nothing unusual about what he's doing? He often gets up from the board. I don't remember -- game one I know the jacket was off lost. That was a loss. Aside from that game, I don't remember --

Mr. VALVO: One of the things you didn't see was he got up from the board and he stood by the side watching, without leaving the room. And this year -- he also has -- not only does he have a room, he also has a corner over last year where he can watch what's happening from about 15 feet away. Well, last year he went into an entirely different room. And I've noticed that he's been doing into that corner a lot during this game.

Mr. ASHLEY: Another thing that happened last year -- and look at this! Talk about treasureing your bishops! Moved g7-g5 has been played, attacking the knight on h4, keeping Garry from executing the threat he had wanted to initiate a moment ago, but now Kasparov is hesitating, but he must love what just happened. That knight on h4 that is under attack is now retreated instantly, but the weak squares in front of the king. You've got to worry a little bit. I mean look at this bishop. The bishop on b2 cutting across the chessboard, slicing into that board all the way to black's king. And I know Garry Kasparov, he loves to attack. You've got to be thinking, he's thinking about mating somebody this game.
